Yipee! Congrats! This sounds (and looks) great. I've been thinking about my new machine a lot and will probably go a similar route with my next one. Luckily my current laptop you recommended two years ago (Fujitsu Lifebook) is still doing very well so I'm still fine, but eventually I'll have to upgrade and it's helpful to hear about your experiences.

I'm imagining the "Switch" commercial now. It includes lots of typeface discussion, a quick mention of organs, and ends, of course, with, "I'm Kieran Healy, I'm ... a sociologist!" Way more hip than that Feiss girl.

Nothing like a 30 second commercial to boil you down to your essentials:GNU, typography, organs, ends, sociology. And that's it.

You'll have to see thing in action. It's pretty cool.

Der... so you're saying *I* should skip the compiled version of R if it's going on Jaguar? That's a real bummer.

Julian encouraged me to get OSX just when Jaguar launched. For $69 I transformed my standard issue UVA computer into a user-friendly unix box. Was deleriously happy... so much so that I got myself an iMac for home. Put in on the kitchen bar and covered it in Saran Wrap. Life is grand.

I'm interested in learning more about synchronizing files on my MacOS X iBook and my Linux workstation. From what I understood in this post you used Fink to install Unison on the iBook, is this correct?
Did you encounter any problems using Unison on the Mac?

Thanks
Fabien
